In the story "Lamb to the Slaughter," Mary Maloney is a devoted wife who is pregnant with her and her husband Patrick's first child. One evening, Patrick returns home and reveals to Mary that he is leaving her for another woman. Devastated, Mary listens as Patrick goes into the kitchen to pour himself a drink, at which point she takes a frozen leg of lamb out of the refrigerator and bludgeons him to death with it.
Rather than panic or flee, Mary calmly disposes of the murder weapon and goes about her business, pretending to be unaware of Patrick's disappearance when the police arrive to investigate. She even serves them the lamb for dinner, and they all eat it, unaware that it is the same weapon used to kill Patrick.
As the investigation continues, Mary remains composed and even begins to manipulate the police into thinking that Patrick must have been murdered by someone else, as she couldn't possibly have done it. In the end, her plan works and the police close the case, leaving Mary free to go on with her life and the child she is carrying.
The story "Lamb to the Slaughter" is a cleverly plotted tale of a woman who is able to turn the tables on the authorities and get away with murder. It is a commentary on the way in which appearances can be deceiving, and how even those who seem the most unlikely to commit a crime can be capable of committing the most heinous acts.
