In the end, the princess made her choice. She opened the door and stepped inside, not knowing whether she would find the prince or the tiger waiting for her on the other side. And so the story ends, leaving the reader to wonder: did the princess choose the door leading to the prince, or did she succumb to her jealousy and choose the door leading to the tiger?

How does "The Lady, Or the Tiger?" end?
The day of the trial arrived. The tiger-cages of the kingdom were searched for the most savage and relentless beasts, from which the fiercest monster might be selected for the arena; and the ranks of maiden youth and beauty throughout the land were carefully surveyed by competent judges in order that the young man might have a fitting bride in case fate did not determine for him a different destiny. And the people, with heads hanging low and sad hearts, slowly made their way home. They had all known that this man was guilty; for no one was to speak out that he was not. She had lost him, but who should have him? She looked forward and kept her head high, her face emotionless and cold.
Often had she seen, or imagined that she had seen, this fair creature throwing glances of admiration upon the person of her lover, and sometimes she thought these glances were perceived, and even returned. This method was a popular one. The theme of this story revolves around the power of choice. Every eye but his was fixed on the man in the arena. Selection of the door with the tiger led to death, while the door with the lady was followed by a wedding ceremony. The princess closed her eyes as she felt them start to sting. It involves a study of the human heart which leads us through devious mazes of passion, out of which it is difficult to find our way.
It was adapted for VOA Learning English by Shelley Gollust. The princess was forced to decide whether to allow the youth to marry the lady or face the tiger. Another door opened beneath the king, and a priest, followed by a band of choristers' and dancing maidens blowing joyous airs on golden horns and treading an measure, advanced to where the pair stood side by side; and the wedding was promptly and cheerily solemnized. He never once looked up at her, never thanked her, never looked at her with so much admiration before. As she ran over the fields of flowers she felt the wind flowing through her short hair, she laughed. Stockton, the author of The Lady or The Tiger, wrote the story and left us questioning who might have been behind the door.
Every heart stopped beating, every breath was held, every eye was fixed immovably upon that man. His barbaric side was happy with his past decisions and he was to live with his daughter forevermore. He had loved the princess, and neither he, she, nor any one else, thought of denying the fact; but the king would not think of allowing any fact of this kind to interfere with the workings of the tribunal, in which he took such great delight and satisfaction. The outcome of this choice is not revealed. To this lady he was immediately married, in honor of his innocence.
The storyteller is Barbara Klein. Great cries went up from the paid mourners. The princess adds depth to this decision by the fact of her knowledge. Indeed, as modernism entered the literary realm with its solemn reactions to the horrors of the early 20th century, the Pre-Raphaelite ideals held by Stockton became quaint and inconsequential. The crowd held their breath as he hesitantly made his way to the crack of darkness that held his fate. This, of course, was an especially important occasion, and his majesty, as well as all the people, was greatly interested in the workings and development of this trial.
Of course, everybody knew that the deed with which the accused was charged had been done. Did the door open to a beautiful maiden or a fierce tiger ready to tear the young man to pieces? Explain both concepts as revealed in this tale. Can't think of one? The only hope for the young man was based on the success of the princess in discovering this mystery. As is usual in such cases, she was the apple of his eye, and was loved by him above all humanity. Then it was that his quick and anxious glance asked the question: "Which? The tiger-cages of the kingdom were searched for the most savage and relentless beasts, from which the fiercest monster might be selected for the arena; and the ranks of maiden youth and beauty throughout the land were carefully surveyed by competent judges in order that the young man might have a fitting bride in case fate did not determine for him a different destiny. The arena of the king was built, not to give the people an opportunity of hearing the rhapsodies of dying gladiators, nor to enable them to view the inevitable conclusion of a conflict between religious opinions and hungry jaws, but for purposes far better adapted to widen and develop the mental energies of the people. The arena is the perfect symbol of the semi-barbaric nature of the king and of the princess.
The king beside her was made joyful as he watched the bloody event. His laughter enraged a fire inside her so great that it made its way into her heart and burned it away. Think of it not as if the decision of the question depended upon yourself. Some would say that the lady came out from behind the door, but there are several evidence that show that the princess chose the door with the tiger. To laugh at the sight of horror displayed right in front of her. And she had decided what she would answer.
She wished for her lover to never love another woman, and she had also longed for a good show. The girl was lovely, but she had dared to raise her eyes to the loved one of the princess; and, with all the intensity of the savage blood transmitted to her through long lines of wholly barbaric ancestors, she hated the woman who blushed and trembled behind that silent door. I figured she would do something like that at first, but once I put some thought into it, my ending turned out completely different! Now, the king had a daughter, the princess, as fanciful and passionate as her father. Stockton was already a prolific author by the time he published "The Lady, or the Tiger," but this story is his most enduring and popular work, and it's still studied today. After all, that the princess hates the lady deemed suitable for marriage to the young man makes her all the more biased and all the less trustworthy in terms of her ultimate decision about whether to save or doom him.
Tall, beautiful, fair, his appearance was greeted with a low hum of admiration and anxiety. The only hope for the youth in which there was any element of certainty was based upon the success of the princess in discovering this mystery; and the moment he looked upon her, he saw she had succeeded, as in his soul he knew she would succeed. The princess hated the woman behind that silent door. How her soul had burned in agony when she had seen him rush to meet that woman, with her flushing cheek and sparkling eye of triumph; when she had seen him lead her forth, his whole frame kindled with the joy of recovered life; when she had heard the glad shouts from the multitude, and the wild ringing of the happy bells; when she had seen the priest, with his joyous followers, advance to the couple, and make them man and wife before her very eyes; and when she had seen them walk away together upon their path of flowers, followed by the tremendous shouts of the hilarious multitude, in which her one despairing shriek was lost and drowned! The king and his advisers were in their places, opposite the two doors. But as if it depended upon that hot-blooded princess, her soul at a white heat under the fires of sadness and jealousy. He turned, and with a firm and quick step he walked across the empty space. .
The doors represent fate, the tiger represents death and punishment, the lady symbolizes innocence and reward it's not her fault she's lovely and the Princess is jealous. Even though the audience recognizes how grand the youth is, they are so committed to the entertainment value of his trial that they do not rise to his defense. Would it not be better for him to die at once, and go to wait for her in the blessed regions of semi-barbaric futurity? When he looked at her, he saw that she had been successful, as he knew she would succeed. The first purpose is to simplify the justice system. Interesting Vocabulary Semi-barbaric: Half savage or uncivilized, brutal and cruel, the other half civilized or "not quite" barbaric.
