Reflected appraisal is a concept in social psychology that refers to the way in which an individual's self-concept is shaped by the reactions and evaluations of others. Essentially, it is the process by which we form our own self-perception based on how we believe we are perceived by those around us.
One important factor in reflected appraisal is the concept of social comparison. When we compare ourselves to others, we are often influenced by their opinions and evaluations of us. For example, if someone tells us that we are intelligent, we may come to view ourselves as intelligent as well. On the other hand, if someone tells us that we are not intelligent, we may begin to view ourselves as less intelligent.
Another important factor in reflected appraisal is the role of social identity. Our social identity refers to the group or groups that we identify with and feel a sense of belonging to. These groups can include our family, friends, cultural or ethnic group, and even our workplace. The opinions and evaluations of these groups can significantly influence our self-concept and self-perception.
Reflected appraisal can also be influenced by the way in which we present ourselves to others. For example, if we put a lot of effort into our appearance and present ourselves in a confident manner, others may view us as more confident and attractive. On the other hand, if we present ourselves in a more reserved or timid manner, others may view us as less confident or attractive.
Overall, reflected appraisal plays a significant role in shaping our self-concept and self-perception. It is important to recognize the influence that others have on our self-view and to be mindful of the way in which we present ourselves to others. By doing so, we can better understand and shape our own self-concept and self-perception.
