Whoever they are immediately disappears from the rest of the story. Read all three and consider the questions at the end. There is almost a sense that the knight is returning to whence he came. The knight as a fighter, a warrior was given a higher status than say a common foot soldier. This is what I intend to explore today. Clearly there are countless occasions of when this code was completely ignored and indeed when this list was turned from an expectation to actually do the opposite.

Not that this collection finds only emptiness and non-meaning in these caves and lakes. Ravens tend to represent death and this gives the poem a more negative connotation and sets the tone to be ominous or evil. Anthropomorphism of this kind can be justified on the grounds that the invented bird-talk reflects real, observable bird behaviour regarding food, territory and judicious co-operation.

Therefore the hawk and the hound would be expected to stay with the knight to protect his body, to preserve the understanding that even though his soul has gone to a higher place there remains a sense of dignity in preserving his earthly remains. His hound and hawk have both gone off to hunt and his lady has already found another man to replace him. With the status came responsibilities. They sit on his bones and pick out his blue eyes and then take his golden hair to create a nest. Then they talk about how no one even knows he there except for his hawk, his hound, and his lady fair. However in the next sentence we see an utterly divergent path from the Three Ravens ballad.

These are biological imperatives, similar to those which drive the crows to their carrion-feast. We learn that the hounds have lain down to pine and die?
