In this thought-provoking novel, Picoult follows her usual format of narration by different voices, but adds an allegorical story written by one of her characters. While there is a twist to the ending, "The Storyteller" does not have the usual cracking surprise ending that is typical of Saki. How does Iswaran describe the uprooted tree on the highway? By cutting out the middleman — the storyteller — a short story also cuts out the power and mystery that a history of retellings brings to a story. The children are especially fond of asking questions beginning with "Why? In contrast to information, which is valuable only for a moment, a story has enduring value.
