Smooth Talk is a 1985 American film directed by Joyce Chopra and starring Laura Dern, Treat Williams, and Mary Kay Place. The film is based on the short story "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" by Joyce Carol Oates, which was inspired by the real-life murder of teenager Barbara Ann Roberts in rural Kentucky in 1961.
