I was curious about a novel featuring mostly white characters--and it's very well-written, but I have had some trouble engaging over the long term. In his introduction, Bloom sees Baldwin as a prophet whose essays are more important than his fiction. Rufus is almost catatonic, only speaking when directly addressed and when Vivaldo is briefly distracted, Rufus sneaks away from his best friend. . But it was only love which could accomplish the miracle of making a life bearable — only love, and love itself mostly failed.

James Baldwin’s “Another Country” is a Gorgeously Devastating Masterpiece
Perhaps this has to do with how perplexing Baldwin is as an author—it takes a while, almost too much effort to get into the story, and then suddenly, unexpectedly you're in an ever-tightening vice, not sure how the hell Baldwin got you there before you even managed to notice. Granted, his focus on a very particular group, mid-to-late 50's Greenwich Village, certainly one of the most socially progressive enclaves in society at that time. . It suggests, more importantly, that eliminating gender and racial difference will not solve the "problems" of difference either. It seems like he may want to save it, but Cass herself is ambivalent. The funeral scene where the pastor is eulogizing Rufus is by far one of my most powerful moment's in reading I have had.
