Sure, the earlier one is more about the spirit of Christmas literally but I found the later much more heartwarming and sweet. His 1859 novel, A Tale of Two Cities, set in London and Paris, is his best-known work of historical fiction. I really thought Dot had cheated poor John. Dickens left school to work in a factory when his father was incarcerated in a debtors' prison. The portly gentlemen point out to Scrooge that prisons and workhouses "scarcely furnish Christian cheer of mind or body"—Dickens presumes that Christianity declares that all people are entitled to cheer of mind, not merely a life of subsistence-and that "many cant go there; and many would rather die. It only took me 3 days to read it, and it's only 101 pages.

I liked the twist and thought it a sweet little story. A few new scenes, particularly with the ghost of Christmas present, that have been cut out of most current renditions. Evremonde imprisons Lucie's father for eighteen years in the Bastille. I was determined to read it so that I could say that I read a book that was his. When I opened it up, it was a copy of my Grandfather's and was dated 25 December 1914--over a 100 years old! A Christmas Carol Scrooge's mean and miserly reputation is well-known amongst his acquaintances and no-one suffers more from his penny-pinching ways than Bob Cratchit, his ill-used clerk. Everything turned out well in the end,though, and I'm glad I stuck with it.

But injustice and tragedy hit the Manette family earlier when the Marquis de St. This book did give me a better opinion of Dickens but I must confess, I couldn't get into the second short story in this book so just read CC. Christmas Carol: Dickens is always a good read, but I enjoy that this one is more of a short, sweet story.

Many versions of the movies have a lot of accurate dialogue and happenings, but the book also has some unique things that the movies were never able to capture. . Nobody is beyond the power of love and mercy. The first person for whom Scrooge weeps is, significantly, himself. But on Christmas Eve, old Scrooge is visited by the ghost of Marley, his late partner in business who shows him terrifying visions of the past, present and future including one of what his own death will be like unless hie is quick to mend his ways. There have been so many versions of it portrayed in both written and video formats. I was determined to read it so that I could say that I read a book that was his. You are not entirely wrong, of course, anymore than the Victorians were entirely right. The Cricket on the Hearth was so hard for me to understand. Too often we have replaced the family circle with a family wireless plan.
