The story begins with Santiago having gone 84 days without catching a fish, causing him to be ridiculed by the other fishermen in his village. Despite this, he remains determined and sets out to sea early one morning, determined to catch a fish and prove his worth. He eventually hooks a giant marlin and begins a three-day struggle to reel it in, despite facing numerous challenges such as sharks and his own physical exhaustion.
Throughout the story, Santiago exhibits great determination and perseverance in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. Despite being exhausted and injured, he refuses to give up on the fish and continues to battle it with all his strength. His determination is also evident in his refusal to accept defeat, as he refuses to allow the sharks to take his catch and instead fights them off with whatever means he has available.

I wanted to take him fishing but I was too timid to ask him. Old Man and the Sea is the story of an old, seasoned fisherman and the greatest catch of his life. Did I relish in his failure? He ends up killing all the sharks and he gets home safely, and exhausted. In this sense, Santiago feels relatable to me. He killed many sharks and when he ran out of weapons he continued to fight.
However, if we live long enough, all of us will experience that many of the things we once took for granted are now a struggle. This is obvious through the way Hemingway treats the depictions of the marlin, as well as other fish and the birds in the sky. We stick to our dreams just like Santiago sticks to his fish. He simply woke, looked out the open door at the moon and unrolled his trousers and put them on. He does it for his own personal content and confidence. We feel pride when we succeed just like Santiago feels pride when he finally succeeds in killing the fish. In April of 1936, Hemingway published an essay in Esquire magazine entitled "On the Blue Water: A Gulf Stream Letter," which contained a paragraph about an old man who went fishing alone in a skiff far out at sea, landed a huge marlin, and then lost much of it to sharks.
It represents the fragility of old age and foreshadows disappointment and defeat. He was clothed with tatters of old ships' canvas and old sea cloth. We feel sorry for Santiago is the same as we feel sorry for ourselves because weakness and failure are unavoidable parts of our lives. Yet the ending is not depressing or demoralising. Santiago is determined to validate his existence while the Marlin is in a fight for his life.

He stops looking at the fish, unable to bear its sight. I don't really see a need to critique such a great book. As for the motivations of the Marlin, it too only wishes to survive. The bitterness is that he lost the fish. The old man had caught a huge marlin that was now pulling him out to sea.

The days were passing and the old man could not get anything from the ocean. I also hope that for most of us the courage is deliberate and less the product and consequence of poverty and hunger. However, Santiago never really pursues that kind of life he anticipates, even if the opportunities come by, resulting in losing the God-given chance for getting along with great DiMaggio.
