There are three themes that are most prevalent in Cormier's short story. Both boys are in similar circumstances yet one chooses to be backward looking whilst the other looks to the future.
The protagonist in The Moustache, Mike, shows signs of being an unreliable narrator from the very beginning of the story. The nursing home is called Lawnrest, a term that Mike thinks ''is a terrible cemetery kind of name. Afterwards, Mike wonders if his parents have anything they need to forgive one another for. Everything Mike learns from visiting his grandmother suggests that when loved ones are involved in conflicting roles, a person will choose to fulfill the role that is best for those loved ones. A favorite song reminds you of a Friday night riding in the car with friends after the high school football game. The theme I am exploring is how the things we do can have consequences that we do not intend them to have. I think this story would be relatable to many teanagers.
This is a very good short story. Neither did a teenage boy named Mike, until he saw his grandmother at the hospital one day. And she wants him to go see his grandma in the nursing home. One would be the coming of age theme. Although many did not approve nor like the moustache he really liked and wanted to keep it.
