I write a sentence and then I turn it around. An important literary allusion which mirrors the story is to Henry James' story, "The Middle Years" which Zuckerman ponders, quotes, and paraphrases during his evening at the Lonoffs. It's a tour de force of writing and imagination, of which Philip Roth is certainly aware. He knows where the bones of structure go, he knows how to order his information, deploy a flowing rhythm, adjust perspective and fashion a remarkable voice. It does so in the portrayal of Lonoff, in Zuckerman's awakening to the man, and in Zuckerman's new understanding of what his chosen life as an author may entail. Then I have lunch. And he was right.

My 3rd Philip Roth book. This is the type of book I always hope to encounter when I read fiction. The grand story is inching along in the background as he peppers compelling vignettes all over it. It was an Isreali-Palestinian type of deal. Zuckerman and Lonoff talk. Even if names are not stated, readers may guess. This is probably the reason nobody offered me a Pulitzer prize for my writing yet! This one was for you.

This was one of the most brilliant works of art I've ever encountered. He recalls his own family issues that have sprung up now that he has begun to write stories that portray middle class Jewish Americans in the glare of reality. And the consequences that follow. Nathan Zuckerman, a young short story writer hoping for a mentor, visits established writer E. Abravanel is said to be modeled on Saul Bellow.

The story is as much about the beauty of the words as it is about the story. Haven't read him since the 80s, when I picked up Portnoy's Complain. At Lonoff's, Zuckerman meets Amy Bellette, a haunting young woman of indeterminate foreign background who turns The Ghost Writer introduces Nathan Zuckerman in the 1950s, a budding writer infatuated with the Great Books, discovering the contradictory claims of literature and experience while an overnight guest in the secluded New England farmhouse of his idol, E. This is a terrific stand alone read, and it is also an excellent introduction to Zuckerman. No, not even Proust. Is it correct for an author to write of members of their own family?
