Alex figures they will need it, so they all go to help his uncle. The air is beginning to taste funny with all the ash that is in the air. The day arrives to leave and the Morales family makes their way to the designated convoy, but are informed that exit has been canceled because of an imposed city-wide quarantine because of the flu, but the current plan is for buses to leave every two weeks.

He was given the opportunity to send Brianna the oldest sister to a convent upstate. She has ashma from all the ash in the air. He attends a private school on a scholarship, and before the moon disaster worked at a pizza place. If you LOVE sci-fi, drama, adventure, suspense and tragedy, you will just fall in love with this book. The way Pfeffer writes makes you able to put your self into any character's shoes.

I could have gone with the first person though. A very well written book to sum it up. It is a lesson in humility as well as thankfulness for one's life, regardless of circumstances. He was the superintendent of their apartment building, and the family lives in the basement apartment. Chapter two The electricity is back on Thursday morning.
They leave New York City to move to Tulsa, and offer to take Bri with them. In the middle of the night, his uncle Jimmy comes to him needing help packing up all the food in his bodega before the people come and steal it all. However, as Alex finds throughout the novel, when he turns to his faith and the church, there is hope as Father Mulrooney and Sister Rita devise a plan to carry both Alex and Julie to safety. Sister Rita tells Alex they need to leave the city. She wrote it during her last semester at New York University; since then, she has been a full-time writer for young people. This change introduces both a grittier level of grimness the first book didn't have rat-eaten bodies rotting in the streets or stadiums full of naked corpses and some new issues, such as class differences, and the place of faith and the church community in the face of overwhelming disaster. His two sisters finally realize that they only have each other and that if their parents are still alive it will take time for them to return home.
I actually cried at the end. Introduced to him by Kevin Daley. Alex takes his watch to Father Mulrooney so he can tell Kevin's parents. Like the first book, though, big, discussion-worthy themes of response to climate change, the collapse of the energy infrastructure, and the role of the individual within the community are carried by a taut, suspenseful, and realistic story of individual and family survival. As the summer goes on, volcanic eruptions caused by the moon occur worldwide and gases begin to block out the sun, causing the temperature to begin dropping dramatically.
