The fact that Richard's story is so similar but has some very distinct differences that show that Rovera is afraid to go as far with Richard as she did with David Richard is not starved at all and Richard is made to eat worstershier sauce instead of the amonia that could have killed David, shows her only concern is that this time her child does not wind up close to death causing others to notice, with Richard she does the same horrifying emotional abuse and neglect but leaves out the extreme physical tortures and never starves him and lets him get emaciated like David. In the book, Pelzer says child welfare workers called his case the worst case ever in the US. Both are poisons and both kill. He never goes to a Cub Scout meeting again. The Boy is forced to eat the horrific regurgitated mass while his father watches passively.

Honestly, those people may either be in denial or too ignorant not the correct word I am looking for exactly to understand the horrors of abuse. David knows he must distract her until his older brother gets home because she does not act so bizarrely when others are around. I was fortunate enough not to be forced to read this book for school, I escaped with reading something else, but every day at lunch my classmates would regale me with the stories of this book and talked about it incessantly to the point I could give a report on it. At some point, though, things change. But, whether Pelzer's statements are true, false, or exaggerations, an important thing to remember is that a child has limited knowledge about what is going on around him.

Mother later starves Dave for ten days straight, and forces him to clean an unventilated bathroom with ammonia and Clorox, almost suffocating him. Pelzer's portrayal of domestic tyranny and eventual escape is unforgettable, but falls short of providing understanding of extreme abuse or how he made his journey from "Victim to Victor.
Is the book A Child Called "It" a true story?
Individuals who receive the right care will be in a position to pursue their aims. Why were his brothers so ambivalent about the abuse? It has raised the profile of child abuse all over the world. The feelings aroused by the book have compelled me to think of various situations whereby I was abused as a child. Just because something is fictional doesn't take away from the truth pulled from it's pages. Interestingly, he also narrates that he alone was singled out for this extreme abuse, and that his mother rarely treated his siblings in the same way. He is alive and his injuries are minimal, something Mother sees as a failure. While I can not say the abuse in Dave's book was true, or false.

What matters is that he WAS through abuse no matter how much his stories may exaggerate his experiences the fact is he went through abuse and be grateful he is not like others that go on a killing spree or abuses their children. His own family even knows that it's fake. It took years of struggle, deprivation and despair to find his dream and make something of himself in the world. Though he begins the school year with new clothes and shoes, David must wear the same clothes every day and is soon dirty and smelly—and hungry. His brothers, Ron and Stan, simply ignore him.
