Little Dorrit is a novel by Charles Dickens, first published in 1857. The novel tells the story of Amy Dorrit, a young woman who has lived her entire life in the Marshalsea debtors' prison in London. Despite her difficult circumstances, Amy is a kind and compassionate person who cares for her family and tries to make the best of her situation.
The novel begins with the arrival of Arthur Clennam at the Marshalsea prison, where his mother is being held. Arthur becomes interested in Amy and begins to investigate her family's circumstances. He discovers that Amy's father, William Dorrit, has been imprisoned for debt for many years and that the family's financial struggles are due in part to the mismanagement of their finances by Mr. Dorrit's brother, Frederick.
As Arthur continues to investigate, he meets a variety of characters who are connected to the Dorrit family in various ways. One of these is Rigaud, a deceitful and manipulative man who is determined to ruin the Dorrits. Another is John Chivery, the son of the prison turnkey, who is in love with Amy and hopes to marry her someday.
As the novel progresses, Arthur's investigation leads him to uncover a number of secrets and mysteries surrounding the Dorrit family and their connection to other characters in the novel. He discovers that Mr. Dorrit is actually a wealthy man, who has been hiding his fortune in order to avoid paying his debts. Arthur also learns that Rigaud is actually an imposter, using a false identity to manipulate the Dorrits and others for his own gain.
Eventually, Arthur is able to help the Dorrits regain their fortune and free William from prison. He also helps to expose Rigaud and bring him to justice. In the end, Amy and John are married and Arthur is able to reunite with his own family and find happiness.
