Every single person alive should read this book. This weird quirk aside, we all found this to be an interesting and occasionally upsetting read, but nothing a preteen can't handle. It was a good story, all in all, but I got bored of it in some parts and had to really try to get into it. Sakane, try to make something good out of the unpleasant circumstances of their lives. She grows rapidly toward adulthood and develops the courage necessary to face not only the deaths of her pet dog and Mr. Like Yuki, she is resilient enough to fight her disease, helped by the true friendship of the rapidly maturing Yuki. Then later they hear about the bombing of pearl harbor. Yuki is a fun sweet character, lively, outspoken and emotional. Three scenes may be enacted as a performance piece following the study. If nothing else, readers will go away knowing the basic facts. If we do, then we will be the ones to destroy ourselves and our children as well. But after Pearl Harbor is bombed by the Japanese in the midst of World War II, she starts to see her world fall apart.
