Empire of the Sun is a novel by J.G. Ballard that tells the story of a young British boy named Jim Graham who becomes separated from his parents during the Japanese invasion of Shanghai in World War II. The novel follows Jim's experiences as he navigates the dangerous and tumultuous world of war-torn China, struggling to survive in the midst of bombings, food shortages, and the harsh realities of life in a Japanese internment camp.

Bells jingled as he rode at headlong speed, followed by the leading warriors, all eager to out-strip him in the race. It's just one of those brilliant classics that may be regarded as timeless. He finds skeletons in fields and corpses floating in the river. It was remarkable then that this group of unmanaged, ruthless ruffians gave its full and unswerving allegiance to a quiet, slender, twenty-three year old by the name of John Coffee Hays. A different kind of fame arose when it came out that her mixed race son, who at age 12 escaped during the raid and grew up to become the brilliant warrior and leader of the reclusive Quahadi band of the Comanche, Quanah Parker. This is a great read.

I tend to avoid the fiction books as I have found over the years that no matter the imagination of the author, war was entirely more gruesome, graphic and even funnier than anything that could eventuate from one human mind. Though no victory, the precedent of this incursion can be seen as the beginning of an escalating campaign which in seven years would result in a final defeat of the Comanche nation.
They nearly annihilated certain tribes — such as the Apache and the Tonkawa — made treaties with other tribes, and consolidated their holdings into a roughly delineated land known as Comancheria, which comprised portions of present-day Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Kansas. This book, although a fantastic, sweeping history of the Comanche, it is not a work to be discussed as academic history. This book has only a tiny, tiny mention about Quanah. The Japanese soldier who had taken pity on Jim, recognising that this small boy was starving, began to laugh good-naturedly, and pulled the rubber plug from his metal water-bottle. Ballard moved away from science fiction, but he is still considered one of the leading authors of the genre. As I later read a few of his novels I had a slow and growing sense of how his adult fiction drew upon that early experience described in this memoir in both the world-turned-upside-down story which resurfaces in several of Ballard's later novels and the oddly half affectionate tone of the child narrator for the Japanese even in the internment camp - there is an incident when he is being taught trigonometry and he asks the Doctor who is teaching him if he should show the Japanese guards his sums so that they could improve their targeting of incoming American bomber planes, more striking is the strange atmosphere as the young Ballard watches Kamikaze pilots walking about the airfield that borders the internment camp before they depart on their missions.
