The symbolism of the materials shows the difference between the two generations. It is also important to notice how the rhyme scheme does become more consistent towards the end of the poem, which can be interpreted as showing the greater sense of clarity which the narrator is achieving. The irregularity mirrors the nature of the central relationship and the distance between him and his parents. It upholds the idea of the need for valuing relationships within the family.
