When Sparks first met them, they had been married for 60 years—and yet the depths of their enduring love for each other were, according to Sparks, awe-inspiring. He enjoyed the little pleasures in life, like canoeing down the river that ran along his property line. Noah then asks Allie about Lon and about her passion for painting, Allie admits that she gave art up despite going to college for it. As Noah reads to her from the notebook, she, for a brief moment remembers that she is the young Allie. Believing in prayer as he does, he takes time to pray as he opens the book, puts on glasses and picks up a magnifying glass, and prepares to read. When she sees an article on his house, she is compelled to find him again and either tell him she is engaged or reconnect their love for each other.
As it unfolds, their tale miraculously becomes something different, with much higher stakes. During this separation, Noah tries to stay in touch with Allie but is unable to reach her. After bedtime, she's typically easily frightened, never knows him and is anxious if awakened. He adopts a crippled dog abandoned by its owners and assists his neighbors financially without asking for anything in return. Through their lives, the two have written letters to each other and these provide memories for Noah. Back at the house, Allie and Noah sit in front of the fireplace and sip bourbon as they continue reminiscing about the summer of 1932. When Allie asks Noah if he recalls having sex at the end of the summer, neither of them can resist their feelings any longer.
In the end, they have no power to keep these two soul mates apart.
