JFK's objective was to force the missiles out of Cuba without war, to defend his country's vital interests without causing a nuclear holocaust. Kennedy Greenwood learns about the Soviet Union's plan of placing nuclear weapons in Cuba. The afterword in particular is really good, highly analytical. But the strongest argument against military intervention was that it might "erode, if not destroy, the moral position of the US throughout the world". The United States has often had the great benefit of having the greatest possible leader in times of great crisis.

Even though I know the resolution of this conflict, the book read like a thriller and had me on edge. One, President Kennedy brought together a group of people that had different approaches and opinions of how the situation should be handled. It is heavy and there's a lot of technical and political jargon and time specific language that can make it trickier to understand in 2020 or later of you're reading this after that. In light of the current world situation, I decided to revisit "On Tuesday morning, October 16, 1962, shortly after 9:00, President Kennedy called and asked me to come to the White House. Kennedy or JFK constitutes an Executive Committee of the National Security Council or "Ex Comm," whose members talk, argue, and fight their way to giving him recommendations to act on. Kennedy steadied a course that would safely see a supreme nuclear crisis alleviated through his calm, thoughtful judgement and leadership. Their intuitive capacity to communicate often transcended the limits of conventional oral discourse. It was completely unrestricted and uninhibited. This is an incredibly important book. Then the pandemic hit and the theatre was forced to close.

Aside from Robert Kennedy himself, McNamara was the participant whom Thirteen Days most consistently portrays as a dove. These show rapid construction. A bonus is that the edition I read contained a forward by Arthur Schlesinger and an afterward of two essays by Richard Neustadt and Graham Allison, neither of which were available in the paperback I read for school years ago. These weapons could wipe out most of the eastern and southern United States in minutes if they become operational. The Cuban Missile Crisis had the world on the brink of nuclear devastation, with tensions reaching an all time high upon the United States learning of the Soviet Unions placement of ballistic missiles in Cuba. Last but not least, Dean Rusk's role was tragically misrepresented in the Attorney General's memoir. Run time is 90 minutes with no intermission.
