Time as one of the ten best books of 1995. Never mind that she pronounced many of the Farsi words incorrectly. Quite disappointing to say the very least. I thought it was about, maybe, the randomness of families. It sounded like a correction.
Archive also and won her a second Anne Flexner award. Xiu-Mei — the younger daughter of Bitsy and Brad, adopted from China. I found it really fascinating -- this look at Americans and "foreigners" -- seen through this tale of two very different families who are brought together by the adoption of Korean baby girls. For a minute I just sat there. How, in turn, do Sami and Ziba intrigue Bitsy and Brad? Although she has refused to participate in face-to-face interviews until very recently, she has participated in numerous e-mail interviews over the years. She was lugging a bucket-shaped infant carrier by the handle, and you could tell that the baby inside must not weigh all that much. Why do you think Maryam makes the decision she does at the end of the book? She is very disciplined and consistent about her work schedule and environment. And then the parents themselves were free to go, Bitsy leading the way while the woman with the stroller wheeled it just behind her like a lady-in-waiting.

In addition to her novels, Tyler has published short stories in The Best American Short Stories 1983, Best of the South, and Best of the South: The Best of the Second Decade. It was through the character development that the story of the girls was told. So unconventional a love story that it appears to take its protagonists themselves by surprise. There are no interesting characters, not one I can feel any kind of endearing emotion towards. .
Tyler loves every one of her characters dearly. Is it important for an adoptive family to give children from another country or ethnic group a sense of their heritage? It's written from multiple POVs, and we get the POV of one of the Korean girls at age five or something-- but it's 1 not quite believable and 2 it's one of the weaker chapters although it does have this incredibly humorous episode of one mother sending fifty "pacifiers" tied to helium balloons up into the sky now, though a parent of two little ones myself, I find writing about the tedious nature of parenting unbelievably hard to read, going through it myself so I appreciated that Tyler could do it with such panache and humor. I've had it out of the library for quite a while and was shocked when I checked it and found that it has been requested. Yes, we can be ghastly, she seems to be saying, but we mean well really - and we sure know how to enjoy ourselves.
