In the Hunger Games, one boy and one girl from each of the twelve districts are selected to compete in a brutal, televised fight to the death.

Catching Fire Plot Summary
The synopsis below may give away important plot points. He got her family out safely, but District 12 is gone. Katniss has never asked Haymitch about his victory, and he has never volunteered the information. Katniss returns home from the woods one day to find President Snow waiting for her. A hovercraft appears to retrieve Katniss. Katniss realizes that she is the only woman from District 12 ever to win the Games—this means that she will be forced to compete in the Games for a second time. The twist to the Quarter Quell this time around is all competitors will be previous victors.
Katniss wakes up on a hover craft whose passengers include Beetee, Haymitch, Plutarch and Gale. Katniss notices that his artificial leg—which he was forced to get after losing his real leg in the Games—is still giving him trouble. Finnick insists that he and Katniss form an alliance—though Katniss is initially reluctant, she agrees after Finnick helps both her and Peeta. Once they arrive in the Capitol, Peeta publicly proposes to Katniss in an effort to convince the President that their love is real and keep the country from thinking it was a ploy to win the games. No good news awaits Katniss in District 13; upon her arrival, she discovers that her family and Gale are safe, but that District 12 has been obliterated by the Capitol as punishment for her rebellion. Katniss thinks about her relationship with her mother. As expected, Peeta volunteers for Haymitch and he and Katniss head to the Capitol again - this time without getting to say goodbye to their families.
Thus, Katniss and Peeta are in danger of facing the horrors of the Hunger Games once again. Before entering the arena, as the pedestal rises, Katniss witnesses Thread and his men entering the room and beating Cinna to death, in punishment over his controversial dress design for Katniss. However, Peeta volunteers to take Haymitch's place and is sent directly to the train with Katniss, and neither has a chance to say goodbye to their loved ones. Katniss has a huge house in the Village, which she shares with her mother and sister. Katniss feels betrayed by Haymitch. Katniss could also talk to Peeta. Shortly after winning the Games, Katniss is back in District 12.
The Quarter Quell always houses a change in the rules to celebrate the landmark, for example, the 50th games had twice as many competitors as normal. She instantly pledges she will do whatever it takes to save Peeta, even though she knows that will ultimately result in her death. However, they also inform her that they could not rescue Peeta and Johanna, who are now in the hands of the Capitol. Eventually they see Johanna Mason approaching with Wiress and Beetee. Their victory was the first time in history that two people won the Hunger Games instead of just one. Electrocuted, his heart stops but Finnick revives him. Then he turns Katniss and Peeta's world upside by throwing them back into the arena with other winning tributes and there will only be one winner.
The group now devises a plan to try to eliminate the other tributes by running a wire Beetee retrieved from the weapons pile beginning at the tree that gets struck by lightning to the water electrocuting anyone who is on the beach at the time the lightning strikes. Katniss approaches Haymitch and they agree they owe it to Peeta to keep him alive no matter what. A swarm of orange monkeys appear in the jungle and Katniss realizes they are about to attack. Katniss struggles to conceal the vast secret Snow has told her. Their mentor, Haymitch Abernathy, informs Katniss and Peeta that they must display their relationship for the remainder of their lives. His strategy is to taint Katniss' public image, in an attempt to destroy her as symbol for the uprising. From this section onward, Collins emphasizes many class and economic differences.
Back home, Katniss sees a transmission intended for Over the next few days, District 12 becomes a police state. To protect them, she makes a Victory Tour of all the districts. After she and Peeta are pulled off stage, Katniss sees she forgot the flowers she was given, and dashing back out to grab them, she sees the old man who whistled dragged out and shot. Gale tells Katniss that they will free Peeta from the government. They meet the other tributes, most of whom have known each other for years, which makes the Games more awful since they still have to kill each other. They scold Katniss for not taking better care of her looks in recent weeks. At twelve noon and midnight each day, lightning strikes a tree on the island.
He tells her if there is a rebellion in the other districts, then the entire system of districts will collapse. But they were taken by the Capitol, and District 12 is gone. Johanna informs Katniss that she saved the two tributes for her. Johanna tells about how her group was surprised by a rain of blood, causing them to become blinded, and one tribute getting killed by an electrical forcefield. Katniss proposes a public engagement between herself and Peeta, which is carried out and celebrated at Snow's home in the Capitol.
Her family is living at Victory Village, in a home provided for them by the government. Peeta is there, and he and Katniss exchange a few strained words. She tells Katniss that a messenger is waiting to talk to her, and Katniss notices that she looks frightened. This year, the tributes from each District will be chosen from the pool of existing victors. She tells Haymitch she messed up, because she was supposed to calm any rebellion, not stoke it. In response to these uprisings, the government has sent more Peacekeepers to District 12: rules are being more strictly enforced, and many citizens are jailed or killed for breaking the law. Katniss first tells Gale of her plan to leave—Gale is eager to join her, until he realizes that Peeta will be coming, too.
She has been talking to Cinna on the phone to work on her talent, something every victor is supposed to develop. The spinning causes the team to break apart. Sensing a threat, President Snow takes matters into his own hands. Because of her supposed love for Peeta, those in charge of the Games decided to make Gale Katniss' cousin, because it wouldn't be right for her to have a close relationship with another young man. Since Katniss is the only surviving female victor of District 12, this means she is a tribute by default. This goes to show that all the usual stereotypes about people—how they should behave based on their age and their gender—hold no currency with Collins. She is also not happy about seeing the families of the tributes she killed during the Games.
Gale, whose family is poorer than most in his already poor district, has to break the law just to survive. Snow hopes that Katniss will kill and betray as many other tributes as possible to stay alive, and thereby make herself unpopular. He informs her the show of affection her and Peeta put on during the games must continue in order convince residents of the country they acted on love, not rebellion. She senses an undercurrent of rebellion. They meet their fellow victors from the other districts. Lightning is about to strike, electrocuting most of the beach. The last stage of their tour takes place in District 1—the Capitol—where the most powerful citizens live; President Snow is among them.
