A Complicated Kindness is a coming-of-age novel by Miriam Toews that tells the story of Nomi Nickel, a young Mennonite girl growing up in the small town of East Village, Manitoba. This book was a real downer and quite a disappointment. And it's all written in the tragicomic style that Toews does so well. The story reminds me of The Catcher in the Rye. LitHub never steered me wrong before, so I was a bit disappointed after reading Women Talking. Maybe that's why it got all the prizes. Nomi Nickel is thirteen years old when first her older sister, and then her mother leave her alone with her loving but distant father. I did enjoy her sarcasm and voice though but even that got tiring after the first 150 pages or so.

I almost dnf'd it at several points but decided to plow on because I really loved the main character of Nomi Nickel. But now that I'm in my 60s which I find hard to believe I prefer to relax with books that are a little more, um, down-to-earth maybe? Every action we do, has a reation - Trudie had an affair with Quiring because she lost her older daughter, she then realized her mistake, Quiring threatened her with accusations, Trudie saved those notes, Nomi wrote her final school paper about the effects those accusations had on the three people left in her family - her father, mother, and herself. When her sister left, Nomi was inconsolable, believing her sister would go to hell. Those who can leave, do—like Nomi Nickel's older sister Tash and her mother.

It's like the author found all her diaries forty years later in life and decided they'd be great in a book. Travis tells Nomi that she should get on the Pill. So what happened to the mom and sister? Those who went through their life there quietly, going to church every Sunday and working at the local chicken slaughtering plant after graduation, were considered to be on their way up. I suspect Trudie was shunned and that is why she disappeared. By age 14, Taylor was writing songs, singing, and had learned to play the guitar and cello. Quiring's threats had consequences, and destroyed people in the process.

Although this action may seem cruel, it gives Nomi the freedom to leave town also and control her own future. A Complicated Kindness is a coming of age story with a difference - sharp, sardonic and undeniably moving. . But the dream of the exciting adventure - a Swiss Family, a club in the East Village with Lou Reed, a first time that isn't disappointing - is hard to let go, especially when reality is so very lame. So, yes, Miriam Toews is my favourite author! Like Nomi, Trudie has a habit of finding beauty in the most seemingly disturbing of scenes. The narrator is a lost and confused soul, trapped in a situation that is not of her own making.
