"Unpolished Gem" is a coming-of-age novel written by Alice Pung, published in 2006. It tells the story of a young girl named Merle, who is the daughter of Chinese immigrants living in Melbourne, Australia.
The novel begins with Merle's parents, John and Mary, running a successful fruit and vegetable store in a predominantly white neighborhood. Despite their success, they face discrimination and cultural barriers as they try to assimilate into Australian society. As a result, they are strict and traditional with their children, including Merle, who is expected to excel academically and behave in a manner that reflects well on the family.
Merle struggles with the pressure to be perfect and fit in, as well as with her own identity as a Chinese-Australian. She is torn between her parents' expectations and her own desires, and often feels like an outsider in both the Chinese and white communities.

Unpolished Gem allowed me to take another leap in my understanding of some of my friends. Most customers order 24-carat gold, but why they would want to wear the pale metal is beyond Kien. Was either woman more or less justified in her suspicion of the other? Finally, this book is also an excellent story, rather than merely a piece of writing about what happened. Definitely a very interesting memoir, and one of few I would ever give a chance to reading for I really don't like memoirs normally! Life in Cambodia as Pung describes it is drab and tragic, and based only on necessities that often go unmet. She is a go-between in other ways; her paternal grandmother and mother use her quite ruthlessly: "They keep all these secrets and tell them to four-year-olds who cannot possibly understand the complicated channels of hatred. I'm pretty sure Alice's mother is Cambodian though, Alice doesn't reveal much about the beginning of her life, her story starts when her mom is thirteen. How easy or difficult was it to understand her choice at the end of the book, when she breaks up with Michael? So yes, I have talked to her. I learned how to write from a woman who could not read and write — because she taught me how to see the world, beyond the attachment of words.
