The Tortilla Curtain Part 2 Chapter 4 Summary
Al Lopez is the man in charge of the building, a man Kyra trusts and with whom she has worked before. When she heads out at the end of the day to close up the De Ros house, Kyra comes across the same two men who raped América. When they arrive, for the first time, they are surrounded by Spanish-speakers, and América again gets hopeful about the future. The rest of the day is not as pleasant. Everyone is Mexican and everyone speaks Spanish.
The similarities between the two will continue, and it will be important to focus on peoples' attitudes towards the cunning coyotes. Soon he is shouting back that he is simply delivering "flies. Fundamentally, this is part and parcel with a desire to belong to a supportive community. Chapter three returns to the Mossbachers, with Delaney grilling another healthy dinner and watching a rare bird, a California gnatcatcher, hop on the new fence and Kyra relaxing by the pool after her daily jog and swim. While Kyra is explaining that she has to work and Jordan is whining that he wants to see one, Delaney sees shock and fear on Kyra's face and spins around to find the coyote back in their yard, this time after Osbert.

Part 3, Chapter 1 Delaney, Kyra, and Kyra's mother Kit attend a pre-Thanksgiving party at Dominick Flood's house. He reads the flier and realizes that it is an invitation to attend the town meeting on Wednesday night to vote for the building of the wall around the community. This farmer seems to understand the importance of belonging, and he represents a rare positive example in the novel of a genuinely empathetic white American. Despite Kyra and Delaney's attempts to run after the animal, they are unable to catch up to it, and later, after a distraught Kyra had left for work and dropped off Jordan at school, Delaney finds a piece of Osbert's leg, the only remnants of the poor pet. Part 2, Chapter 2 Cándido recalls a previous venture to the United States in which he was almost caught by immigration officials. Navidad is never accepted by either white people or Mexicans. Despairing, Cándido wanders around the parking lot of the post office several times. He returns to the campsite at one o' clock each day dejected, and his boredom with doing nothing begins to turn into rage. The sight makes him feel so guilty for making her live in this manner, and he resolves to surprise her with more food and new clothes.
Of course, after having read the previous chapters, the reader is far more likely to presume that Cándido has gone off to be robbed or beaten or hit by a car or maybe even captured. Jack Jardine had invited Delaney to the home of one of his friends who also lived in Arroyo Blanco, a man by the name of Delaney is thinking about this as he helps Kyra with dinner, wondering what will happen to all of the Mexican immigrants who depended on that labor exchange to survive. As a well-dressed white woman, the men believe her when she says that her husband and brother are in the house waiting for her. It is just another way of showing the truth of the Mossbachers' supposedly liberal values, for while Kyra claims to treat all people equally, her actions against the crowd of people on the corner of the road prove otherwise. The Arroyo Blanco wall is becoming a major issue in this section of the novel and will bring the theme of walls back into the spotlight. He kicks her out of the car at the labor exchange, cheating her out of the extra money he owes her and leaving her feeling revolted by what she has just experienced.
People are fed up with it. Three of the men, including Cándido, got away, but one of them was caught and deported back to Mexico, where he was stripped of all of his possessions. She finds her husband unconscious on the path and brings him back to camp. He uses the example of a coyote who has learned to get water simply by chewing through irrigation pipes. However, he remains in excruciating pain, needing assistance to relieve himself and dealing with a concussion - there is no way he can look for work. However in writing this, it reflects Mossbacher's strong feelings about the creatures and in turn, Mexican immigrants.
Cándido tells her that he will look for work in Canoga Park, and, despite his protests, she insists on going with him. As he waits, he is not afraid for himself - he had been caught three times before. Delaney and Kyra realize that someone has left a dog locked in a car. The couple has saved "three hundred and twenty dollars in that jar," but Cándido knows he must make more to have some sort of housing by the time América gives birth. As she confronts the entire restaurant, Delaney admires her in her determined quest, appreciating and loving this simple battle between right and wrong.
One day, she comes face to face with a coyote and begins to hallucinate, seeing herself in the coyote and in its life, connecting with it until she suddenly realizes that the animal is gone. She hurries Delaney through lunch and plans to take a quick look at the new car before heading to work. She pulls up to the first house that she is showing, owned by the Matzoob family, and immediately encounters a puddle of water on the front porch, caused by an incorrectly aligned sprinkler system. In addition to his embarrassment, however, is shock and shame. It is clear that he is in very bad shape, groaning, barely able to stand and unable to focus his eyes. The first thing Kyra thinks of when she spots the group is the property value of the area. Kyra is horrified when she sees an animal locked in a car in the parking lot of a restaurant.
