I find it very hard to believe that Lee just abandoned the book, particularly after having written 304 pages of it. Welch conveys with resignation the inevitabilities with what passes for justice a Black man facing an all-white jury. In her earlier version, Lee cast the figure of moral salvation, attorney Atticus Finch, as an unabashed racist. It's a lesson I carry with me to this day. No other single title in our history comes close to the success of "Mockingbird. Huck Finn has improved, Dickens is melodrama with little merit, Moby Dick is very exciting even the cetology bits, and Steinbeck is too preachy.

I revisit this book every year because I want to, but I believe as Americans, in the climate our country is in, we all need to revisit this book because the future depends on it. I'm fortunate that I grew up in an area where different races mixed without incident. Oh yeah: which time line rules? I don't remember if I read the book or saw the movie first, but "To Kill a Mockingbird" had a profound impact on me. I am humbled and amazed that this will now be published after all these years. In 1960, I was 13 years old and had never witnessed outright cruelty to an African-American. The cadences of his language lands well on our modern ears yet is never anachronistic to the time period, which is the summer of 1934. Since joining Books-A-Million in 1985, I've been witness to sales of more than 1 million copies of various editions of this classic. The other showy role here is Scout, a character who is the Meta tomboy of American literature.

It was one of those lavender shellacked hardcover editions public schools purchase by the score, overlain with images of a ball of yarn and a gold timepiece in a tree hollow, and of course a mockingbird flying high in the Alabama sky.
