I hope this isn't true. It's hard to review a book like this, a book that churns our stomaches because of the subject matter, but that should be read because of the subject matter. While I I didn't want to rate or review this book and it feels like applauding a tragedy to give it five stars. Both Soraya and her Aunt Zahara are devout, and Sahebjam puts the blame on the corruption of those who prevert religon for thier own ends. And yes, there are some blanks filled in. Although it is difficult to determine to what extent the events depicted in reflect the facts, the leitmotif cannot be accused of distortion.

The stoning stops when she is believed to be dead, but after Ali sees that she is not and the stoning resumes. While he certainly wasn't there to witness the event, all of the landmarks and cover-ups would still have been easily pointed out by Zahra. But this story is so powerful it just wouldn't let me put it aside without comment.
