Granted that she insists the robber bridegroom lived, loved and stole under Spanish rule. The book is perfect for those who wants to read classics, fantasy books. Jamie Lockhart, the bandit, leads a double life. She encounters Goat and asks about Jamie, but Goat says that man is actually a ghost.
And the book is way too long, at just 180 pages. The novel is about marriage, but as the title implies, this is not the daylight marriage of a happy couple in an honest town. Instead of following the design that the critics had laid out for her, she took a big jump, left psychology, common sense and the short-story writer's good-will far behind to tell a most wonderful fairy tale. I have quoted this passage because it conveys the intenseness of this strange, fanciful tale. The second paragraph of the novel forces the reader to dive headlong into this portraiture with a sublime pageantry of metaphorical imagery that is capable of leaving only the least imaginative of readers struggling for the vision she saw in her mind as she sat down to write: "As his foot touched shore , the sun sank into the river the color of blood, and at once a wind sprang up and covered the sky with black, yellow, and green clouds the size of whales, which moved across the face of the moon. Anything to do with the Indian tribe including a VERY disturbing murder of an Indian girl made me queasy. He stood there with his two big toes sticking up. He tries to live simply and with contentment and says of himself at one point: "I know I am not a seeker after anything, and ambition in this world never stirred my heart once. Rosamond knows him only in his robber's rags, while her father has met him in the disguise of a fine gentleman. Many of the reader reviews of this book are unusually perceptive and helped me with a book I found enigmatic.
Those who don't want to give the child in them a happy chance wouldn't like the tale about Rosamond and her robber bridegroom, and shouldn't read it. I also ordered a complete collection of her short stories, as well. In fact, the novel novella? I enjoyed how quickly the story evolved and honestly it was hard to put down. Although wind has blown away the ashes that guided the miller's daughter to the house, the peas and lentils have sprung up into seedlings and the two follow the path of plants and reach the young woman's home.
