"The Reader" is a 2008 film directed by Stephen Daldry and starring Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes. The film is an adaptation of the 1995 novel of the same name by Bernhard Schlink.
The film is set in post-World War II Germany and follows the story of 15-year-old Michael Berg, who becomes ill and is helped home by a mysterious older woman named Hanna Schmitz. Michael becomes infatuated with Hanna and the two begin a tumultuous and unconventional affair.
As their relationship progresses, Hanna reveals that she is illiterate and asks Michael to read to her. This becomes a regular part of their relationship and helps Hanna to develop a love of literature.
Years later, as an adult, Michael is studying law and becomes involved in a trial of former concentration camp guards. During the trial, he is shocked to discover that Hanna is one of the defendants, accused of being a guard at Auschwitz.
As the trial continues, Michael is torn between his feelings for Hanna and his sense of moral responsibility to expose the truth about her past. The film explores themes of love, guilt, and the impact of history on the present.

The Reader Summary
He admits his failings as a father and drives her to a church that he and Hanna had visited during their bicycle tour nearly 40 years earlier. How can this be true? The lead judge asks for a handwriting sample, ashamed, she avoids this test by testifying she wrote the report. When Hanna teases him, he notices that her voice still sounds young. When Hanna is promoted by the tram company to a better paying position and an office job, she becomes unsettled. The SS guards, Hanna included had the power to unlock the exits to let the prisoners escape, but they did not. Michael still feels uneasy about trial and asks her whether she had thought about her time in the SS when they were together. Their liaisons, all at her apartment, are characterized by her asking him to read literary works he is studying in school, such as ''The Odyssey'', "The Lady with the Dog" and ''The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn''.

She becomes engrossed in the book to the point that she begins imagining herself as Marie: Constance and Marie are played by Marie embarks on her new profession with gusto. While Michael is delighted that Hanna has finally learned to read and write, he feels sorry for how long it took her, and for how it delayed her life. Only two people - a mother and her daughter - survived. He visits Hanna to thank her for her help and realizes he is attracted to her. The professor is frustrated with him for not having spoken to Hanna, so he tries to visit her in prison, but cannot face her and leaves her waiting.
