Polanski's very purpose however is to design scenes which by their nature leave the audience in a position where the only feeling they can generate is one of great disturbance and shock. Even though Spzilman lives and we celebrate the triumph of survival, the overriding feeling is one of neither restrained jubilance nor sorrow but rather a numb sensation which encapsulates all the incomprehensible horror and violence that has gone before it. Boy Charles was one of the men, and it's believed the fire was set as revenge for his stealing the Sutters' piano. Szpilman now spends his time working in labor groups; he feels fortunate to survive them because he has few skills as a laborer. Henryk Henryk is Wladyslaw Szpilman's brother, a free-thinking and passionate radical. The German captain shows Szpilman a place to hide and brings him food; he often encourages him with reassurances that the Germans will lose the war soon. When Spzilman's family are being deported the tone is very reflective as he tells his sister that he wished he knew her better.
He considers: you could have said, perhaps, that they had caught the Gestapo spirit. However, after Szpilman succeeds to escape from the ghetto, a friend gives him an address to hide in which coincidentally ends up being Dorota's house. . Some days, Szpilman walks along the wall of the ghetto to get to work, where smugglers are busy. After being forced to dessert his family and then having to live in isolation with his fate a complete unknown quantity, the thoughts about his music are perhaps the only thing keeping him going. But this is the point of the film you watch films about the war and due to the way that the picture is filmed you come away with a certain emotional knowledge. . The film is not about blame nor good versus evil; it is a stark portrayal of the human condition and an extraordinary journey of survival amidst a horrifying event. He was a slave owned by Robert Sutter's family, and his daughter and grandsonâMama Berniece and Boy Walterâwere traded for the piano.
But whatever the truth is in you of that subject in one , you have to be true to that truth. The more barbaric sequences in PolanskiÂÂs film are handled with a direct, unrelenting quality that leaves the viewer cold. In order for Brody's playing to look like it was at the level of Szpilman's, he spent many months prior to and during the filming practising so that his keystrokes on the piano would convince viewers that Brody himself was playing. During the next six years, Szpilman suffered through the food shortages, the forcible confinement of Jews to a walled-in ghetto, the large-scale deportations, including his whole family, who died in the gas chambers, the random shooting of civilians by the Gestapo, the fear of being discovered in his hiding place, and the massive destruction of buildings when German troops abandoned the city to the Soviets. She was a part of the Polish Underground and a Holocaust resistance. People die so quickly that corpses pile up in the streets. Therefore we donÂÂt need to know about them we just need to what happened to them. In my opinion the two films are not even in the same league.
This is the representation offered in most Holocaust films but thankfully Roman Polanski is a director why doesnÂÂt strive to be cinematically obvious and his more layered vision is truly something to be admired. You have to tell it as you believe it is. He is only visited when his protectors bring him food, which they do quite rarely. Polanski lived in a barn until the war ended, at which point he was reunited with his father, who had been sent to a concentration camp. After all its true nature is not sentimental or full of high drama, it is simply brutal and barbaric: ItÂÂs a dreadful historical event and you canÂÂt start glamorising it, you canÂÂt soften it. In spite of all his care, Szpilman is nearly caught several times.
It is a sorry sight and expertly shows that when push comes to shove there is in essence little that seperates our race from the animal kingdom. The Germans might be victorious now, but people take heart in the hope that the Germans will be defeated quickly. Jefferson, North Carolina: Macfarland and Company. Near the end of the war, Szpilman is forced to forage for food and finds a store in a building the Germans are preparing to convert into a fortress against the Russian advance. Unfortunately this move would negatively impact the Polanski family, forever.
