Finally, they reach the town where they will register for the Canadian army, and spend a tense night sleeping nearby, wondering about the challenges they will face in the war. My heart is part Irish, part Ojibwa. Xavier slips back into his memory then, recalling the time when Elijah shot an innocent woman and her child. Much as I enjoyed the story and the general idea, I must admit there was something about the prose style that stopped me from ever loving this book the way I'm sure many others will love it. Then Momaday has a paragraph of contexts that relates to the legend. The story begins with the protagonist, Xavier Bird, has returned from the war minus his leg and addicted to morphine. When he returns, Elijah tells Xavier that he paid that girl to have sex with Xavier.

She also has the power of visions, of divining, a gift that has been passed down to her from her father.

But saying that simplifies what is really a gripping, epic tale; storytelling at its best.
