It is possibly that of an out-of-work labourer calling himself 'Stephen Driver' who had arrived in the village in early January; although, oddly, the dead man was wearing underclothes that had been made in France. In fact, though, Deacon had not died in 1918. At first, all think that the corpse is Cranton alias Driver who disappeared from the village at about the same time as the corpse was put in the grave, which was probably just after New Year's Day.
