In the first chapter of Treasure Island, we are introduced to the main character, Jim Hawkins, and the setting of the story, the Admiral Benbow Inn. Jim is a young boy who lives with his mother and father at the inn, which is located in the English countryside.

One day, a strange old sailor named Billy Bones arrives at the inn and becomes a regular guest. He is described as a rough, violent man with a penchant for rum and a scar on his forehead. Despite his rough demeanor, Jim is fascinated by Billy and often listens to the stories he tells about his adventures at sea.

One evening, while Jim is helping his mother in the kitchen, he overhears a conversation between Billy and a group of shady-looking men. From the bits of conversation he can make out, Jim learns that Billy has a valuable treasure in his possession and that the men are trying to get it from him.

As the days go by, Billy becomes increasingly paranoid and paranoid, convinced that someone is trying to steal his treasure. He takes to carrying a large, heavy chest with him everywhere he goes, and becomes more and more reclusive.
