Jane Addams (1860-1935) was an American social reformer, activist, and leader in the women's suffrage movement. She was also the co-founder of the Hull House, a settlement house in Chicago that provided social services and support to immigrants and the poor.
Born in Cedarville, Illinois, Addams was the eighth of nine children in a wealthy family. Her mother died when she was just two years old, and her father, a successful mill owner and state senator, encouraged her to be well-educated and involved in civic affairs. Addams attended Rockford Female Seminary (now Rockford University) and later studied at the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania.
However, Addams struggled with her health and was forced to leave medical school before completing her degree. In 1889, she and her friend Ellen Gates Starr co-founded the Hull House, named after the street on which it was located in Chicago.

Addams and the other residents of the Hull House worked to improve the lives of the poor and immigrant communities in the surrounding neighborhoods.
