Richard Cromwell was the son of Oliver Cromwell, the Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1653 to 1658. After Oliver Cromwell's death in 1658, Richard Cromwell inherited the title of Lord Protector and became the head of the Commonwealth. However, his rule was short-lived and he was eventually forced to resign in 1659.
Richard Cromwell was born in Huntingdon, England in 1626. He was the third son of Oliver and Elizabeth Cromwell, and was educated at Cambridge University. Unlike his older brothers, Richard did not take an active role in the English Civil War and instead focused on managing his family's estate.
After his father's death, Richard Cromwell inherited the title of Lord Protector and became the head of the Commonwealth. However, he was not as able a leader as his father and struggled to maintain control. Many members of the Commonwealth opposed his rule and believed that he was not capable of filling his father's shoes.
In addition to facing opposition from within the Commonwealth, Richard Cromwell also faced external challenges. The country was still in the midst of the Second Anglo-Dutch War, and the Commonwealth was struggling to maintain its military and economic strength.
Despite these challenges, Richard Cromwell made some efforts to improve the country's situation. He worked to improve relations with foreign powers and tried to stabilize the economy. However, these efforts were not enough to quell the discontent within the Commonwealth.
