Pt Usha, also known as "The Payyoli Express," is a retired Indian track and field athlete who is widely considered one of the greatest runners in the history of Indian sports. Born on June 27, 1964, in the village of Payyoli, Kerala, Usha began her athletic career at a young age and quickly rose to prominence on the national and international stage.
Usha first gained recognition in 1979, when she won a gold medal in the 200 meters at the National School Games. She went on to win numerous national championships and set several national records in the following years. In 1984, she became the first Indian woman to win a medal at the Olympics, finishing fourth in the 400 meters hurdles at the Los Angeles Games.
Despite this impressive accomplishment, Usha is perhaps best known for her performances at the Asian Games. At the 1982 edition of the Games in New Delhi, she won four gold medals in the 200 meters, 400 meters, 400 meters hurdles, and the 4x400 meters relay. She followed this up with four more gold medals at the 1986 Asian Games in Seoul, winning the 200 meters, 400 meters, 400 meters hurdles, and the 4x400 meters relay for a second time.
In addition to her success at the Asian Games, Usha also won numerous medals at other international competitions, including the Commonwealth Games, the Asian Championships, and the Asian Indoor Games. She retired from competitive athletics in 2000, but her legacy as one of India's greatest athletes lives on.
Throughout her career, Usha was known for her determination, hard work, and exceptional talent. She was awarded the Padma Shri, one of India's highest civilian honors, in 1984, and was inducted into the Indian Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005.
