Perelandra, also known as Venus in our solar system, is the second novel in C.S. Lewis's science fiction series, Space Trilogy. The novel follows the adventures of Dr. Elwin Ransom, a Cambridge scholar and the protagonist of the first novel in the series, Out of the Silent Planet.
In the beginning of the novel, Ransom is transported to Perelandra, or Venus, by a group of angelic beings known as the Eldil. Upon arriving on the planet, Ransom discovers that it is inhabited by a race of beings known as the hrossa and the pfifltriggi, who are peaceful and live in harmony with their environment.
Ransom's mission on Perelandra is to protect the planet's ruling queen, known as the Green Lady, from the machinations of a being known as the Un-man. The Un-man is a twisted version of a character from the first novel in the series, who has come to Perelandra with the intention of corrupting the planet and its inhabitants.
As Ransom struggles to defend the Green Lady and the purity of Perelandra, he is aided by the hrossa and the pfifltriggi, who see him as a hero and a protector. Ultimately, Ransom is able to defeat the Un-man and save the planet from corruption.
Perelandra is a thrilling and thought-provoking novel that explores themes of good versus evil, temptation, and the power of free will. It is a must-read for fans of science fiction and fantasy, as well as anyone interested in the works of C.S. Lewis.
Perelandra: Of Space and Faith
Ransom is sealed back into the coffin-like enclosure and transported back to earth. From here on, the majority of the novel is told from the perspective of Ransom, who details his journey and mission. He ultimately triumphs and reascends to the surface, paralleling Jesus's resurrection. They reside in space, or Deep Heaven. However, as Ransom points out, God works all things out for good, and even the lack of evil cannot stop the abundance of his goodness. When they reach it, they spot a small spaceship floating on the water, and Ransom realizes that Weston, his past nemesis and captor on Mars, has come to Perelandra. Weston is convinced by the demon that Weston is God and the universe.
Earth, in fact, is effectively under siege. Lady is much like a child, because she does not understand evil and the corrupt ways of Weston. When he was transported in the coffin, one half of his body was in direct sunlight, which is why one side of his body is very tan and the other side is ery white. The planet of Perelandra is a beautiful and life-infused one. Lewis, an Oxford scholar, sets out one autumn afternoon to the home of his good friend Ransom, a Cambridge philologist. The King and Queen help him prepare for his earthward journey in the capsule and bless him, and the eldila come to carry him home. Later in the day, he discovers several more types of life on the island, all of which converge on a single "carpet.
Even some of the smaller points indicate this symbolism: Jesus had to descend into the grave Hell for three days following his crucifixion the act by which he took the punishment for man's sin. This act of loving sacrifice is the act by which God most glorifies himself, and it is no longer possible to enact on Perelandra. Lewis is certain he is seeing the Oyarsa of Malacandra, the ruler of Mars. . Wells or Isaac Asimov. Ransom is ordered to go to Perelandra without cause or reasoning as to why or what he will be doing there.
When Ransom arrives, saying that he comes in peace, she asks, "What is peace? Ransom has been called to travel to Perelandra Venus and prevent an attack on its inhabitants by the Earthly fallen Oyarsa the "black archon". Golden mists drift above it all. Ransom then travels up the mountain and an angel greets him with a flaming sword bidding him to continue on his journey when he is greeted by two eldila. When he samples its juice, he soon empties it, finding a new depth of pleasure in the indescribable taste. It is inherent in the plot, the characters, and even the landscape of the Perelandran world. Lewis has re-imagined for us what it might feel like to actually encounter an angel. He finds one of the fairy-like frogs he admired just days before, lying ripped open, mutilated, but still alive. He is approached by The Voice, which is the Maleldil, or God, of Perelandra.
Weston is a scientist who has come ro Perelandra to conquer rhe planet so that mankind may exist on perelandra and make perelandra a civilized planer. Having written Mere Christianity and Surprised by Joy, it is clear that Lewis enjoys and is incredibly gifted at writing about his own faith. Ransom's mission is to travel to a world in which he is an alien in order to preserve the innocence and purity of its inhabitants. He tries to convince her that obedience sometimes means disobedience. In the pass he finds a valley with a pure pool in its center. He prepares for his journey by summoning the narrator and having him help with the journey.

Eventually, Ransom becomes conscious of falling rapidly into a warm, golden twilight, then entering a green-tinted darkness and beginning to move upward again. He also makes a new friend: a dog-sized red dragon who acts like a dog.
All of the islands are mobile, except the main island, which remains stationary. This pride will soon lead to his downfall. He reveals his pride when he tells Ransom he is the greatest scientist of all time, and has knowledge and understanding about life no other human can claim. Riding the waves of this ocean and savoring its muted, green and gold light is a pleasant experience. As the rain and waves subside, Ransom, exhausted, notices something like a floating island and swims toward it. However, she is "young" and must become wise about things to become older.
Weston then tries to corrupt Lady, so that when she becomes corrupt she will no longer be able to rule Perelandra and he can rule in her place Ransom sees that Weston is trying to corrupt her and he knows why, Weston has become possessed and power-hungry, Ransom Tries to protect Lady from Weston, but Lady tan not figure out Whom she should listen to, or who is telling her the truth.
