When it dawns on Emilia that Iago orchestrated the whole affair to take revenge on Othello for not appointing him as lieutenant, she dauntlessly confronts her husband in front of everyone with the truth about the handkerchief, thus exposing him as the despicable liar that he is.
As Othello realizes the mistake he has made, he cannot withstand the pain and regret, and takes the dagger to his own heart, stating that he was one who ''loved not wisely, but too well. He is the debonair, the gallant, and on occasions, the fool, the victim of his own immaturity. A Christian Moor and general of the armies of Venice, Othello is an eloquent and physically powerful figure, respected by all those around him. Othello also effectively highlights the theme of pride. In Brabanzio, we see a self-important Venetian senator, who displays rather disturbing attitudes of racism and misogyny.
