A serial killer is defined as a person who murders three or more people in a series of seemingly random events, often with a cooling off period in between. One such serial killer was Richard Trenton Chase, also known as the "Vampire of Sacramento."

Chase was born in 1950 in Sacramento, California and had a tumultuous childhood. He was neglected by his alcoholic mother and subjected to physical and emotional abuse by his father. Chase struggled with mental illness and substance abuse throughout his life and was diagnosed with schizophrenia in his 20s. He believed that he needed to drink human blood in order to survive and began killing small animals and drinking their blood before eventually turning to killing and cannibalizing humans.

In 1977, Chase killed his first victim, Ambrose Griffin, a 33-year-old engineer who lived in the same apartment complex as Chase. Griffin's body was found in his apartment with multiple stab wounds and his blood had been drained. Chase then killed two more people in quick succession, Theresa Wallin and Evelyn Miroth, both of whom were also stabbed to death and had their blood drained. Miroth's 22-month-old son and 6-year-old nephew were also killed, but their bodies were never found.

Chase was eventually caught and arrested in January 1978 after a witness saw him dumping Miroth's body in a dumpster. He was found guilty of six counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to death, but his sentence was later commuted to life in prison due to a ruling that found California's death penalty law to be unconstitutional. Chase died of an overdose in 1980 while in prison.

The case of Richard Trenton Chase serves as a chilling reminder of the depravity of which some individuals are capable. His actions were driven by his mental illness and substance abuse, but they had devastating consequences for the families of his victims. It is important to recognize the signs of mental illness and seek help for those who may be struggling in order to prevent tragedies like this from occurring.
