According to the Mesopotamian creation story, the universe was created by the gods Anu, Enlil, and Enki. Anu was the god of the sky and the father of the other gods, while Enlil was the god of the air and the king of the gods. Enki was the god of water and wisdom.

He does this for two reasons: first, in order to release the gods from their burdensome menial labors, and second, to provide a continuous source of food and drink to temples.
