Overall, I liked this novel though. Later events in the story drastically change her personality.

General Fladdock General Fladdock, an American militia officer and a snob. The scenes on board ship are graphic, and powerfully described, as well as providing an important indicator to the character development of the two travellers. Especially the last 40pp. His departure leaves room for Martin Chuzzlewit in the Pecksniff household. Messy, sprawling and less structured in parts. But then, there are not one but two Martin Chuzzlewits, plus Martin the younger gets to go to America, and since his experiences there are so momentously funny, it's not such a bad choice after all. Every chapter constitutes to the greater whole, every encounter and conversation adds something to the story and the overall growth of the work.
Pecksniff takes Martin on to establish closer ties with his wealthy grandfather. He has two spoiled daughters, Charity and Mercy, nicknamed Cherry and Merry. She is to be his nursemaid, with the understanding that she will be well cared for only as long as Martin senior lives. We are anticipating both good and bad endings, even though we cannot predict them, throughout the book. In addition, for every subsequent edition of the novel in perpetuity, Dickens left instructions to be printed, which offer an apology to the US citizens.
