It was a small stuffy room with only one window opening on the weather-beaten side wall of a shop; it was cluttered with dust-laden rolls of maps, globes, and geometrical squares. Unable to imagine how Swami got there, Ranga decides to take Swami to the office of the nearby District Forest Officer, who will know what to do with him. Rajam blinds the author and the three-member group establishes themselves, and a new orientation of the group, the Threemani Mighty, leads to the formation of their own cricket team, which provides the impetus for the second part of the story. He walks for a mile and finds the road quiet, deserted, and unfamiliar.

Swaminathan waved back frantically. He is generally good-natured and gets along well with his peers and family, although he can be arrogant or deceitful at times, and is easily swept up in the plans and enthusiasms of others. His father gets transferred at the end of the term. He marvelled at himself for having taken it seriously and rushed into all this trouble. Swami has frequently redefined his identity throughout the story, but at this point, he begins to reach a state of barely having an identity at all. Swami regrets not telling his father what happened and is especially sorry to miss cricket practice leading up to the match.
