A man named cal a former nba player now his teams coach. Cal had confidence in Lonnie but he didn't want him to be too much over his head. Lonnie has what it takes to go to the NBA if he focuses on it. How would you feel? It definitely kept my interest, and I couldn't put it down. He is growing up with a mother that they always get in arguments and the only thing that he will ever do to cheer himself up is play basketball. At first, Lonnie isn't really sure if he wants to play because he doesn't really like the coach.
The author often uses the first person point of view to show what life was like for Lonnie. It brings me to a younger time in my life when it was less complicated. I think it was very special how a coach can make an impact on someone as a person and as a player. But , as time goes on , he learns that Cal is a man with a broken past , who is trying to help lead his team to victory. The bettors were Tyrone and his friends who has gotten in to some trouble with Cal, Lonnie, and his friends. He is in his last year of high school and almost given up his dreams of playing basketball, until he gets asked to come play in a tournament that will give him a chance to get a college scholarship.

His life completely revolves around basketball, a sport in which he has a great talent. As Lonnie gets to know Cal better and better, he sees through his run-down lifestyle and realizes that Cal is a good person.
