Africa, still mostly undeveloped and covered in wilderness has a beast hidden within waiting to be let out. He pictures the cold, fog, disease, and battles with the savage natives they had to endure. He also nearly falls into a random hole in the ground that slave laborers dug. If Marlow and Kurtz are linked together, then he must hate Marlow. Marlow also abandons chronological sequence.

Thesis: For many, the American dream is something we long for but cannot achieve. A black man accused of starting the fire is beaten. As Marlow travels from the Outer Station to the Central Station and finally up the river to the Inner Station, he encounters scenes of torture, cruelty, and near-slavery.
