George Frideric Handel was a German-born composer who is most famous for his operas and oratorios, particularly his masterpiece "Messiah." Born in Halle, Germany in 1685, Handel was the son of a successful barber-surgeon and a talented soprano singer. From a young age, it was clear that Handel had a natural talent for music, and he began taking organ and composition lessons at the age of seven.
Handel's musical career took him all over Europe, and he worked with some of the most prominent musicians of his time, including Johann Sebastian Bach. In 1710, Handel was appointed Kapellmeister (director of music) to the Elector of Hanover, and he spent the next few years working at the Hanoverian court.
