Quite simply, it is a magnificent performance. This paved the way for UK-based producer Peter Fudakowski to approach Hood with his idea for a film adaptation of playwright Tsotsi. Image: Presley Chweneyagae, former president Nelson Mandela, Terry Pheto, and Oscar. Hood has emphasized the thug characteristics of Tsotsi through the use of costume design. That was a good approach found in the screenplay and that director Gavin Hood was able to use very adroitly.

That said, the pace never dips and the music from, among others, South African kwaito star Zola who appears in the film is excellent. He was hired to write and direct 'educational dramas' about HIV and AIDS. It never occurred to me that the films could be about us, South Africans, and I never thought we could learn about ourselves. In a just world, Chweneyagae would have been a nominee for Best Actor for his performance as Tsotsi. As Tsotsi choses to cross this wasteland he sees a life that he missed out on, such as loving parents and a significantly safer environment which helps develop him as a character towards his redemption.

They follow this elderly man onto the train and, even surrounded by a crowded train car, are able to rob and tragically assault the man. What you will see is an insight into the path that leads a boy to become a thief. Making the viewer understand his sociological isolation from other beings foreshadows his growth for change. When Tsotsi goes back to Miriam's house, she reveals that she knows where he got the baby, and begs him to return the child to his parents. So what makes or breaks the story is whether you believe in the transition that happens in the mind of the protagonist.

This illustrates the criminal and intense gangster lifestyle in my sequence. This is a guy who recognizes his own capacity for evil and I think that's exciting in a sort of popular culture kind of way. This stealing of the baby is another symbol of an example of a gamble where a simple act of grand theft auto turns to a kidnapping, however the baby is also a symbol of hope for Tsotsi and becomes his path to redemption by causing the feeling guilt for his actions. Why can't we say that this is a classical mythological tale about a young person encountering mentor figures in a classic mythological sense, where instead of meeting Yoda he meets a three-month-old baby, a woman, a man in a wheelchair and a father figure, and through this series of encounters he achieves a moment of self awareness and clarity if only for a brief moment. So what happens to Tsotsi is really a meltdown.
