The film tells the story of two women, Evelyn Couch (Bates) and Ninny Threadgoode (Tandy), who become friends while Evelyn is visiting her husband in a nursing home. The local sheriff offers to release her and pin the crime solely on Big George, but Idgie refuses to sacrifice her friend. .
Ruth is also abused by her husband, which may be a good opportunity for parents to talk to kids about what's acceptable in relationships and how to identify someone who's abusive. . He basically tells her to pack up and leave the town so she is not arrested and also tells her to leave Big George in the town to get arrested because the people wanted to have someone hung for the crime, and they would rather have it be a black man than a white woman. . We do not meet Idgie until she is nearing the end of her early childhood and reaching the stage known as the middle childhood.
