Flashdance is a popular 1983 romantic drama film that tells the story of Alex Owens, a young woman who works as a steel mill welder by day and an exotic dancer at a local bar by night. The heroine works in the most improbable working-class bar ever put on film, a joint named Mawby's that has a clientele out of the Miller's TV ads, stage lighting reminiscent of Vegas, go-go dancers who change their expensive costumes every night and put on punk rock extravaganzas and never take off all their clothes and never get shouted at by the customers for not doing so. Because she is dancing as herself rather than as a character in a show, the song is also representational of her story for the film audience. These are a lot of "character details" even if she didn't also have a saintly old woman as a mentor, a big slobbering dog as a friend, a bicycle she rides all over Pittsburgh, a loft the size of a sweatshop, a sister who ice skates, a grumpy old pop, and the ability to take off her bra without removing her sweatshirt. During the slow beginning of the song, the judges seem completely unimpressed and maybe even bored, but when the tempo picks up the stodgy judges begin to loosen up. A few weeks later, Alex goes to Hannah holding an envelope from the Shipley Academy, and opens it to discover she's been called back for a final audition "My Next Step". Starring Julia Macchio as Alex Owens, and Ryan Green as Nick Hurley, Tanisha Moore as Kiki, Dana Hunter as Tess, Nic Casaula as Jimmy, Hannah MacDonald as Gloria, Alexandra Zeto as Ms. During the meal, just as Alex puts her foot on Nick's crotch, his ex-wife, Katie, stops by their table.
