The book started really well but ultimately failed to live up to the initial promise; too repetitive the author keeps revisiting previous scenes - did she underestimate her readers' memories? Catherine's thoughts of snow have a similarly literary cast: for her the remembered text is Joyce's Doctor Zhivago. From the corner of my eye I can almost see Ellie gazing at the water, Pei Qing exchanging a few dollars for an ice-cream, James frowning absently at the crowds, Catherine shading her eyes against the sun to watch the climb Gail Jones begins Five Bells with an evocative depiction of a sunny day in Sydney's Circular Quay. But it could have been so much worse — it could have turned out as with James in Gail Jones' remarkable 'Five Bells'. I mean, for a book that talks so deeply about sexual intercourse, it was barely able to reach a noticeable climax. Ellie, stepping out into sunlight as the novel begins, both is and is not Clarissa plunging into the fresh June morning at the opening of Mrs Dalloway, while James's narrative links him to Woolf's Septimus and to Woolf herself without obscuring those aspects of his character and experience that are both distinctively modern and distinctively Australian.
I was forced to read it for English, and it has to be the most self indulgent piece of work I've ever read. They share space in the city and in the story with two others: Pei Xing, a refugee from Mao's cultural revolution who was imprisoned while her intellectual parents suffered arrest and execution and now relishes the city's vibrant beauty; and Catherine, an Irish woman haunted by her adored brother's untimely death. Zhivago—a novel which each seems to be familiar with. There was one point in the book whe Well this book was a waste of time.
. The author's writing is so poignant and rich that it brought me to rest. I understand that a characters childhood is important in shaping them as adults, but it was so exaggerated it just became annoying, like I was reading the same thing over and over as we once again delved into the same memory of their over-stereotyped past. Another favourite part of the book is from James where he has attended a funeral in his small home town: At the funeral there were flowers, and suddenly it made sense, why this might be so. I think we have established well and truly on Goodreads that I like things like narrative and plot.

But seventy pages in to a two hundred page book, I still had no idea what the book was about or what was happening. I have been meaning to contact you to see if you were OK, but I now see you are back updating your blog and doing your masters! I can't see why with quotes like this: "she saw the bowl of bright water, swelling like something sexual" "Circular Quay. . In this novel she seemed to be working in a more contemporary urban realm and I did not feel that it suited her style as much. Sydney's quayside and opera house provide the focal centre of a narrative that draws together four very different characters, charting their thoughts and movements through a single day in the city. But it To be fair, I didn't actually finish the book so I'm not sure I can really rate it.
I found myself re-reading a lot of the paragraphs, I had to, to absorb the beauty of the words. Having said all that, I'm sure if i persevered this book would have much to offer - it is perhaps just not the book I feel like reading at this time. Great use is made of the location. Lyrical, poetic descriptions of the surroundings are one of author Gail Jones' strengths. This is an unapologetically literary novel, insistently highlighting its own rootedness in the modernist tradition: Pound and Joyce are invoked, along with Wallace Stevens, Faulkner, Nabokov and in the novel's borrowed title the Australian poet Kenneth Slessor.
It is fantastic that a writer can make us feel and understand her characters in such a short book. It is these evocative descriptions that give us insight into the characters state of mind. Eventually they meet, but under unexpected and tragic circumstances, right at the end of the novel. I recently stayed in a Rocks hostelry, just across the road from the Museum for Contemporary Art, which features in the book but was sadly closed whilst I was there. Despite this crap, the whole book still seemed to be leading up to something, building. I had to read this for English, and it was a basic bitch of a book. For Ellie the building is an ode to joy, to James it's white curves resemble predatory teeth, like those a shark. . All their sections read the same, they had no distinct voice apart from each other.
I also struggled to stay abreast of who was who as it switched back and forth between characters. As in Woolf's fiction, however, the moments of conjunction in the material world matter less than the subtler connections that lie beneath the surface. By nightfall, when Sydney is drenched in a summer rainstorm, each life will have been transformed by the events of this day. This book is written by an Australian about a group of people who all happen to be in the same area of Sydney on the same day. On page 12 there is this description from Pei Xing one of the four characters in the book, where she describes seeing the Opera House from the harbour: There it was, jade-white, lifting above the water. It was like all 4 of the characters were self-indulgent loonies living in their past. The camp to that point had gone smoothly — only a few minor hiccups to be expected when a large group of students are in each other's company for three days and two nights.
Some were new to the school, being understandably nervous about the new cohort they found themselves in. She has a PhD from the University of Sydney and her reviews and essays have been widely published in The Australian, Sydney Morning Herald, Australian Book Review, Sydney Review of Books etc. Like yes I understand she's Chinese, no need to have her stopping to do Tai Chi or bringing up Mao every paragraph to remind me. I do make exceptions, but generally modernist and postmodernist writers aren't really my favorites. This is, as one would expect, a story of love and loss, as well as of reconnecting. The book is not particularly plot-driven, but it is very much a story about characters, and, in particular, their inner lives.
The book is so poetic and there is not a single turn of phrase or paragraph that is wasted. A little later he moved it down onto the beach. It relaxed me so much that every time I started reading it, I was lulled into sleep. Crowds of tourists mix with the locals, enjoying the glorious surroundings and the play of light on water. And the light, I just loved the way the light is described.
