One example of family conflict occurred in my own family when my sister and I were in high school. My sister was a straight-A student who was heavily involved in extracurricular activities, while I struggled academically and preferred to spend my free time playing sports and hanging out with friends. Our parents had high expectations for both of us and frequently compared us to one another, which often led to arguments and tension.

One specific instance of conflict arose when my sister was accepted into an elite college and my parents pressured me to follow in her footsteps. I felt overwhelmed and frustrated by the expectations placed on me and resented the fact that my sister seemed to have all the opportunities while I was left in her shadow.

To resolve this conflict, my parents and I sat down and had an open and honest conversation about my goals and aspirations. I shared my concerns about being compared to my sister and feeling like I had to live up to her achievements. My parents listened and acknowledged my feelings, and we were able to come to a compromise in which I pursued a college education that aligned with my strengths and interests, rather than trying to meet the expectations of others.
