Enchantress from the Stars is a science fiction novel written by Sylvia Engdahl. It was first published in 1970 and has since become a classic in the genre. The story follows Elana, a young woman from a distant planet called Ethos, who is sent to Earth to evaluate the possibility of establishing diplomatic relations with the inhabitants.

Elana is an enchantress, a member of a highly advanced and technologically advanced society that has mastered the art of manipulating energy. The Ethosians have long been aware of the existence of other intelligent life in the universe, and have made it their mission to spread their knowledge and wisdom to other civilizations. Elana is chosen for her mission because of her exceptional abilities and her youth, which allows her to more easily adapt to the strange and unfamiliar culture of Earth.

Upon arriving on Earth, Elana assumes the identity of a young Earthling named Elaine and begins her evaluation of the planet. She quickly realizes that the people of Earth are not as advanced as the Ethosians, and that their society is plagued by conflict and violence. Despite this, Elana is determined to find a way to help the people of Earth, and sets out to learn as much as she can about their culture and way of life.

As she delves deeper into the mysteries of Earth, Elana becomes increasingly disillusioned with her own society and begins to question the Ethosian way of life. She comes to realize that her people's obsession with technological advancement has caused them to lose touch with their own humanity, and that their intervention in the affairs of other civilizations may not always be beneficial.

Despite the challenges she faces, Elana remains determined to find a way to bridge the gap between her world and the people of Earth. In the end, she is able to establish a successful diplomatic mission and helps the people of Earth to achieve a greater understanding of their own place in the universe.

Enchantress from the Stars is a thought-provoking and beautifully written novel that explores themes of cultural differences, technological advancement, and the importance of understanding and compassion. It is a must-read for fans of science fiction and anyone who is interested in the human condition.

This book made me reconsider--and I came to the same conclusion, after seriously considering the arguments. In this way I can transmit my thoughts to you. Yet the basic idea that humans, and presumably extraterrestrial civilizations, do advance—that the invaders were immature rather than collectively evil and could be expected to outgrow their aggressiveness—is, I trust, powerful enough to override such incongruities. I can have no happiness until I have at least tried. Elana, though still a first-year student at the academy of the interstellar Anthopological Service, is elated by the chance to take part in her father's perilous mission to the medieval planet Andrecia, which is being invaded by colonists from a young starfaring Empire.

The theme of this story involves the issue of clashing cultures. I actually have two editions of this. We are all members of the same human race, the same species. Immediately, that they saw the words on the apple, a quarrel broke out between the three goddesses. He sees Elana as the Enchantress from the Stars who has come to test him, to prove he is worthy. Elana is the main character, but Georyn's and Jarel's perspectives are used often enough that we see how each event becomes different when seen through their eyes.

There are specific parts of the brain devoted to encoding and decoding thoughts. My fictional premise is that a species is accepted into the Federation when it has reached the stage where psychic abilities such as telepathy and psychokinesis are commonly and safely used by a majority of its members, who can therefore mingle freely with other such species without posing a threat to anyone or finding themselves at a disadvantage. The key to the plan is a woodcutter's son named Georyn, who believes the menace beyond the forest to be a dragon. The Imperial Exploration Corps has arrived at the planet Andrecia where they intend to expand their population. Our heroes are changed as they face different futures with the strength of understanding and willingness to sacrifice. In my opinion, emphasizing physical differences between intelligent species detracts from reader identification.

Was there any part of you that wished they could be together in the end? And we wonder how Georyn can succeed with the so-called spell Elana has taught him. Her sister, Diana, was born in the United States. Jarel's story is told in a straight forward fashion but in third person. The book is perfect for those who wants to read young adult, fantasy books. I think she is a silly girl, ready to become a martyr for silly reasons. The book has been criticized on these grounds by people with background in anthropology, and since I myself took many graduate courses in anthropology, I find this misinterpretation expecially troubling. .

What are they missing out on? Unlike the writers of Star Trek, I'm unwilling to have my characters violate their basic non-intervention policy merely for plot convenience, and this severely limits their involvement in the affairs of hypothetical worlds. Jarel, a doctor assigned to the colonizers, is appalled to see the mistreatment of the indigenous people. Science fiction that portrays radically different cultures usually aims to make points relevant to our society, not to say anything about the actual universe. This novel also trips over one of my pet peeves. The Andrecian 'natives' in this book are not immature in any sense. No, I wish I had! About the little-known fact that most educated people in the 18th and 19th centuries believed planets of other suns are inhabited. With this idea Ella baker was trying to bring democracy to organizations.

Her father spends quite a lot of time explaining things to her and thus to the reader , but I guess that makes sense since he's basically field training her in the moment. This is particularly true of young readers. . Essays about what life will be like in the future, artificial intelligence, psi powers, healthcare policy, and more. Sylvia Engdahl, Author of Science Fiction Novels

I couldn't state her age in terms of our years, since it's not said whether she's descended from people of Earth. They must have eliminated racism among people of their own species, so that they will interact wth other species without intolerance. For that reason among others, I don't consider my fiction fantasy or even half fantasy, as some people in the children's literature field but not people in the science fiction field have interpreted Enchantress from the Stars. How many different editions of Enchantress from the Stars exist? To him, Elana is an enchantress who can give him magical powers that will enable him to defeat it. Stories must arise in an author's mind before they can be put into words; it takes more than writing ability to create fiction, and more than speculation about the universe. But what methods could they use without revealing themselves? No oath can absolve you of the responsibility to think things through, and not to do terrible things. How can they drive the Imperials away without revealing their own alien origin? The creator of a fantasy world does not expect readers to wonder whether a comparable world, or situation, really exists somewhere.

Perhaps their point of view is not too far off. The writing is good though, beautiful. Loved this story of high technology and low meeting--it's kinda a Prime Directive parable. She went to school to become an elementary teacher, and stayed in it for 1 year, then decided she hated it. Their names were Hera, Athene and Aphrodite.

The degree to which it can come under conscious control is unknown, and the use of it in my fiction does not pretend to be a realistic portrayal of a faculty beyond our present understanding. The story is good, and the book is well written. Did it help you tell your story or make it harder to tell? But they don't pretend to be 'superior' to planet-bound cultures. There are 12 in English, plus 9 translations and some ebooks and audiobooks in different formats. A little more thought would make it a truly great book. Reflections on Enchantress from the Stars

enchantress from the stars by sylvia engdahl

Georyn's story is also in third person but in a poetic way that gives us a sense of the medieval. There are, to be sure, several levels in the story, some of which may be viewed as allegory; but to interpret the relationship between Elana's people and those of other worlds as applicable to intercultural relationships on Earth is a false analogy. This book is one I like to reread. It has been a long time since I have read such a soul-stirringly striking novel. It was like going to the best class in the world and being paid for it.
